how is craft beer made image

How is craft beer made we hear you cry, well you’ve heard of craft beer, so that’s the first thing out of the way! Let us walk you through the process.

Here we will take you through the craft beer brewing process in a bit more detail. This is just for fun and to help explain a little about why we do it this way. Some of the pictures are from breweries that we don’t use or own, but they give you a sense of what we do.

Ingredients

There are several steps involved in making your favorite craft beer, here is an overview on how it all comes together:

Brewers need quality ingredients to make good beer. Locally sourced products reduce a breweries carbon footprint from transportation.

The mash

First things first, Malt- we crush specialty grains (2 row pale malt blend) and malted barley in the mash tun. The mash tun is a large vessel that heats the water (malt steep) and grain together into a homogenous mixture called a “mash.” The liquid drained from this process after an hour or so is called “wort.” This wort is then boiled with hops for anywhere from one hour to several hours depending upon style of beer being produced.

We use locally grown 2-row pale malt which gives our beers their signature toastiness and richness.  After boiling, the wort is cooled down, here the beer is inoculated with yeast and begins it’s transformation from sweet wort to beer.

Fermentation

Our brewmaster pitches a culture of top fermenting ale yeast that begins converting the sugars into alcohol; making this step unique in commercial brewing is that we have mixed cultures of different yeasts and bacteria for each batch, making each one just a little bit different.

After fermentation, our beer is transferred to an aging tank where it is allowed to mature normally for 3 weeks before bottling or kegging. This again adds to the uniqueness of our beers as they continue to mature throughout the supply chain making every bottle slightly different than the previous one you bought!

Overview

So there you have it, a quick explanation on how craft beer comes to be! Each beer is then tested before going off to being either kegged, bottled or canned. Each product is tested to ensure it meets our high standards.

The making of craft beer really is just that simple! While it may sound like a lot of steps, they are actually very straightforward and easy to do in the brewing process. And with each batch being different due to slight changes in fermentation or maturation, we think we’ve found the perfect way to make great tasting beers for all kinds of people! Remember, please drink responsibly.
